8 Types of Smart Home Sensors

Despite the newest and most modern of technologies and security systems, theft and burglary is still very prevalent with a high number of cases occurring each year. In this article, we will detail eight different types of smart home sensors and what each of them can do for your overall home security and monitoring. Read below to find out why smart home sensors truly deserve the name “smart”.

1. Glass-break detectors

As their name suggests, glass-break detectors can identify when a panel of glass in your home (such as windows or doors) has been broken or compromised. These sensors are usually placed near entry points such as doors or windows and can detect the frequencies emitted when glass is broken.

Since burglars often enter your home by breaking through glass, these detectors serve a useful purpose in helping to identify and alert the owner of home invasions. They can also alert homeowners to damages done to their homes while they are away, thus leading to a faster response.

2. Infrared sensors

There are active and passive infrared sensors that work to detect motion by using infrared light. Passive infrared sensors (or PIR) are the most commonly used, and they work by detecting the infrared light that an object (human, car, or animal) emits.

Active infrared sensors (IR) are less commonly used, as they require more power and hardware. These work by determining the distance between an object and the sensor. Since they can detect the proximity between a potential danger and itself, they are useful in protecting valuables, fine jewellery, and artwork. They are also commonly used in the automotive industry when considering obstacle and collision avoidance.

3. Door/window sensors

A door/window sensor uses a two-piece contact magnetic sensor to alert you if there is an intruder. The sensor and magnet are both placed on or inside the door or window frame. As soon as the door or window is opened, the magnet will separate from the sensor, causing it to activate.

When the magnet separates from the sensor, an internal reed switch inside the sensor will become tripped. This action then signals the alarm system. Next, the system will carry out a predetermined action based on the Response Type for the sensor. This could include either requiring a system disarm or activating a siren, for example.

4. Garage door tilt sensors

As the name suggests, garage door tilt sensors are designed to detect the angle of an open door and send a signal. These sensors have a cylindrical cavity and a conductor that transmits electricity. When an item lines up straight, the conductor sits in the cavity, allowing electricity to pass through the sensor. Once a tilt occurs, the conductor moves out of the cavity, cutting off the electrical signal.

Garage door sensors are connected to a security system that sends notifications to users, whether that be via text, email, or push notifications. With a smart home network, you can control your doors from a smartphone or mobile device and receive home security alerts whenever someone leaves the door open.

5. Freeze detector

A freeze detector, also known as a temperature sensor, alerts a security system when the temperature falls below a certain amount, which is usually around 4°C. It has a built-in temperature sensor that monitors the temperature on an hourly basis. If the temperature hits the threshold, you will hear an audible alarm and get a push notification sent straight to your phone.

6. Smart thermostats

One common smart sensor that you may already be familiar with or have in your home is the smart thermostat. These measure temperatures within the house and can help you save on energy costs. Smart thermostats can re-adjust temperatures based on activity levels within rooms, which can work to save you money in the long run. These thermostats are usually a good choice when it comes to being energy-efficient and cost-effective.

7. Smart smoke sensors

Every home should be outfitted with a functional smoke and carbon monoxide detector. These are of the utmost importance in any home, as a fire or poisoning can occur easily without being noticed and pose a risk to your safety and health.

Smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can also monitor air quality to detect allergens, dust, and dangerous particles in the air. Ultimately, these detectors are a great investment in your health and security.

8. Water leak sensors

Water leak sensors can save you from major water damage and help you to save money on potential repairs. They detect water leaks while they are still easily fixable. These detectors should be put near areas of the home susceptible to water leaks and damage, such as washrooms, kitchen sinks, and hot water tanks. Automatic shut-off valves also work wonders in preventing major or irreparable damage once a leak has been detected.
