When it comes to your home security system, the panel is sort of like the brains of the entire system, since it’s what connects your home with the company that provides the monitoring services.
This means that if something triggers one of the sensors, your control panel will relay that information to the business monitoring your security system, and that party will then take the appropriate measures in response to the emergency, such as notifying the police of a disturbance at your home.
It goes without saying, therefore, that your security control panel is an important part of the overall security system, and this means that you need to take the proper precautions to ensure that it is always in good working condition. Read on for some tips to protect your security control panel — you never know, after all, when this information might come in handy.
Positioning
You’ll have more flexibility with a wireless control panel than with a wired panel, but whichever type you choose, you still need to exercise caution about placement. The reason is that regardless of whether it’s wireless or wired, you need to ensure that it’s positioned high enough off of the floor so that tiny little hands don’t meddle with the system. Yes, you want it to be accessible. But toddlers, for instance, should not be playing with it since they could cause damage or inadvertently arm or disarm it.
Maintenance
Your home security system requires ongoing maintenance so that it works as it’s supposed to and doesn’t let you down when you need it most. For instance, you’ll want to change the batteries periodically, and you’ll also want to inspect the security control panel visually from time to time to ensure that it’s working as it ought to. If you see signs of wear and tear or of damage, then let your service provider know so that arrangements can be made to send you a replacement.
Testing 1-2-3
It also makes sense to test your security alarm panel periodically as part of a drill. You can either put the security alarm system into test mode or phone your service provider to let them know that you intend to conduct a drill. This will give you an indication as to whether or not your control panel is working properly.
Your security control panel is a vital part of your overall home security system. As such, you need to pay special attention to it so that it functions properly in the event that there’s ever an incident.
