Security cameras are an important part of any home security system, but where you actually place the cameras plays a critical role as to whether or not they will actually be effective. If you want to make the most of your monitored security system, read on for a look at 3 tips on security camera placement.
1. Points of Entry
One of the first things you need to consider when thinking about camera placement for your monitored security system is covering the areas that are direct access points into your home. Obvious points of entry include, the front and back door, ground floor windows, and the garage or side door. So, you’ll want to ensure that your cameras are placed in a way that covers these areas. If someone tries to break in, the cameras will be able to capture vital clues such as, what the perpetrators look like and other identifying data, and cameras will also serve as a deterrent that will keep many criminal-minded people from victimizing your home in the first place.
Even if you place your security cameras in strategically important areas, you may still do yourself a disservice if you install them where they can easily be interfered with. If the cameras are, say, at about eye level for a person of average height, they can potentially be vandalized by criminals who want to do everything they can to thwart your security monitored system. So, place them up high enough so that they function properly and are hard to reach.
You need to consider the type of camera you have to figure out where to install it. For instance, if you have a camera with a 45-75 degree focus range, then it’s best to focus them on specific areas like a doorway or window. However, if you buy a wide angle camera with a 75-180 degree focus range, then you can use it to focus on a wider area. In addition to focus range considerations, you also need to factor into the equation the amount of unobstructed viewing room your cameras require to function properly.
Your monitored security system is critical, so it’s important that you pay attention to camera placement. With proper planning, your security cameras will provide you with the security you need for your family and property. From installing them in the right places, ensuring that their out of reach and using the right cameras, will ensure your monitored security system a success.
