It’s time to pack your bags and head out for some R&R, but first you’ll want to take some basic safety precautions to keep your house and belongings as safe as you can.
Here are a few things we at Canadian Security Professionals suggest doing before you go away:
Hold your mail
It’s a sure-fire tip-off no one’s home when there’s a huge pile of mail falling out of your mailbox. If you’ll be gone more than a few days, put a hold on your mail and on your daily paper. Or, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to bring everything inside.
Make it look like someone’s home
Think like the kid in the movie, Home Alone – set the lights, TV and radio on a timer creating typical noises and flickering lights of an average family home at night. Leave a car in the driveway. Arrange for someone to mow the lawn, too. During the winter, arrange for snow removal.
Mum’s the word
Never announce your vacation dates on social network sites like Facebook and Twitter. Wait until you’re back to tell tales and upload photos.
Trust a friend
Give your vacation contact info and a spare key to at least one friend or neighbour to be able to contact you in case of emergency.
Make sure people can tell your home is secure
Especially when you’re away, it can be a great idea to advertise your security measures. Do whatever it takes to get across the message, “this is not a home to be messed with.”
Hide the hidden spare key
Take any hidden spare keys out of commission. Remember to re-hide them when you come back.
In winter, set the heat to about 13°C – warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing, and during summer, set air-conditioning to about 26°C.
Keep valuables safe
Lock up any jewellery, the deed to your home, wills, and other valuables or sensitive documents in a fire-proof safe.
Alert your alarm company
Make sure all door and window alarms are set and working before you leave and call your home security company Hamilton to let them know you’ll be away.
